Room 2 Class Happenings

We have had a busy start to Term 2, with new children joining our room and lots of learning happening. We have been learning about writing letters, remembering that all letters should start with ‘Dear ___’ and finish with ‘From ____’, so that the person knows who the letter came from!

We have also finally finished our book ‘The Wishing Chair’, by Enid Blyton. The children have loved having this read to them each day and we are eagerly waiting the arrival of a new Wishing Chair book. While we are waiting we have done some artwork showing our favourite part of the novel.

Entertainment Book
The PTA continues to offer families the chance to purchase the Entertainment Book that was sent home this week .This book can be returned to the school office if you don’t wish to purchase it. Some families have taken the opportunity to buy the book for great discounts. However please take the time to check it out as we feel it’s good value for families and easy to save the $50 cost if used over several everyday purchases, while also supporting the schools fundraising. If you feel you would like to purchase the book please forward $50.00 to the school office with the form attached, Sacred Heart School gains around $10.00 per book sold.
Next PTA meeting will be Monday 3rd May at 7.30pm in the staff room at school. (Please note change of date)
Everyone welcome. Thanks ~ Your PTA

Dear Parents
Welcome back to Term 2. It is good to see all the children in their winter uniforms. This is to be worn until the end of Term 3. There is a copy of the uniform requirements attached.

Welcome to Benjamin Dawson, Bella-Rose Heads-Bragg and Neve Waddel who joined the children in the junior school this week.
We hope they and their families enjoy their time at Sacred Heart School.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brookland, Henderson, Kyle and Ingham families.

There are a number of sporting notices attached to this newsletter. Please reply as soon as possible to avoid your child missing out on their preferred sport.

Interviews ~ School will close on Tuesday at 12.30pm.
These will be held on Tuesday 27th & Wednesday 28th April. Please fill in the interview times in the junior corridor. The interviews are 3-way with your child discussing their learning goals with you and what their next learning steps are and how they can be achieved. Because the focus is on your child can we ask that no pre-schoolers are in the interviews.
Some parents will be having an additional interview to discuss in depth their child’s progress as part of the new reporting requirements in the National Achievement Guidelines.
At these interviews we will not be reporting on your child’s progress against the recently published national standards. Our teachers have not received any professional development with the standards and further time is needed to evaluate such a fundamental change to our assessment practice and to consult with you as to what your preferences are with regards to reporting. As always we will be reporting on your child’s achievements against New Zealand Curriculum level expectations which are supported by nationally referenced assessments.

Upcoming Events
Board Meeting – 26 April @7pm

Oyster Raffle
Unfortunately due to the weather, our Oysters will not be available until next week. We will call all winners next week as soon as the Oysters are available and make arrangements for these to be collected or delivered.

Entertainment Book
The PTA is offering families the chance to purchase an Entertainment Book as per the flyer that was sent home at the end of term 1. Although these books are new to Invercargill, they have been used as fundraisers for non profit organisations and schools for many years, in other areas of NZ and most of Australia. The book covers Invercargill. Dunedin, Queenstown and surrounds. It is made up of vouchers and discounts relating to Food, Entertainment, Accommodation, Travel & Leisure, Car Hire and Theme Parks in Australia. They are $50 each and the school receives $10 for every book sold. If you would like to have a look at one there is a sample in the office or visit their website www.entertainmentbook.co.nz. A book will be sent home to each family early next week and this can be returned to school if you don’t wish to purchase it. This is not compulsory; we are just giving families the opportunity for great discounts. However we do ask that you please take the time to check it out as we feel it’s good value for families and easy to save the $50 cost if used over several everyday purchases, while also supporting the school’s fundraising.

Next PTA meeting will be Monday 3rd May at 7.30pm in the staff room at school. Everyone welcome.

Thanks ~ Your PTA

Safety Problems in the Car park

Last term Room 9 looked at safety issues in the car park before and after school.

The main safety problems were because of the following things:
1. Where the Oscar bus parked.
2. People trying to turn right when exiting the car park.
3. Children in the car park without an adult.
4. People stopping too long in the Drop Off Zone.

Room 9 have talked with Constable Fenton, the teachers, read the survey and also had class discussion. One of our next steps is to run some safety trials for these problems.

We would appreciate your cooperation with these.

The First Rule to keep all children safe is: All children in the carpark must have an adult with them.

The Second Rule is: Children must wait behind the red line area until collected by an adult or the teacher says they can go to the car picking them up in the drop off zone.

The Third Rule: No Right Turn when exiting the car park.

Finally, the children going on the Oscar bus will go with the teacher on Bus Duty and get on the Oscar Bus parked in the Bus Stop on North Road at 3pm.

We have appreciated your help with this BIG SAFETY PROBLEM. We hope you will help us with the next stage. We will keep you updated on what we find out.

Dear Parents

I wish to take this opportunity to thank all parents and families for your support this term and wish you all a happy and safe Easter break.

Interviews
These will be held on Tuesday 27th & Wednesday 28th April.
School will close on Tuesday at 12.30pm.
This year we are trialling a new system for interviews/reports, especially in Rooms 1 – 6. The children from these rooms will have received a note requesting a 15 or 30 minute interview. This is so we can have the usual 3-way interview to discuss children’s goals and an additional parent/teacher session to discuss progress and achievement. Forms are in the junior corridor for you to book a time that suits you best.

Upcoming Events
School starts back – 19th April
Interviews – 27/28 April
