Dear Parents

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Winter family this week.

This will be the last newsletter of the year and I wish to thank all our parent community for their help and support throughout the year. A special thanks to the Board of Trustees for your governance role and a huge thank you to the PTA for your on-going support this year culminating in another very successful fair last month.

Congratulations to our Year 6 children who leave us for the next steps in their educational journey, we thank you all for your leadership this year and wish you all the best next year. Many thanks for the morning tea and gifts this morning.

Congratulations to Mrs Stupples who has a new position in 2017 as an ICT advisor to Invercargill schools. Vanessa has been at Scared Heart for 12 years and we wish to thank her for her commitment to all the 5 year olds as they have entered the school system. We will miss her involvement with the choir and our school productions but wish her all the best with her new position.

We also farewell Mrs Winders  and wish her all the best in her new position as Deputy Principal at St Josephs, Oamaru. Nicola has been at Sacred Heart for 8 years and we thank her for her commitment to the children and especially for her role as Director of Religious Studies  in recent years. Good luck and we wish you all the best.

After Mass, families are invited to a BYO picnic dinner in the hall. Bring along your picnic dinner including a rug to sit on (optional) and enjoy the company of our school community.

Enrolments
Please let me know of any prospective enrolments. To retain our teaching numbers we have to enrol more children than we lose in Year 6 every year. An optimum number for us is about 25 children per year. While we get enquiries from the website, we also rely on our parent community to spread the word. If you have pre-school children, can you please contact me to get copies of our prospectus to put in their centres?

Week 9: December 5-9  Second week of Advent: Hope
The second purple candle is lit on the second Sunday of Advent to represent the hope of Christ coming to the world.
The word “hope” has two meanings in the Bible. The first, tiqvah, contains the sense of eager anticipation or waiting. The second, elpis. depicts a sense of confident expectation based on certainty. Biblical hope is secured by God’s faithfulness to His promises. For the Old Testament leaders, their hope was in the Messiah’s arrival. For us, it is the hope of the Messiah’s return. God’s plan for humanity unfolded in the town of Bethlehem, the birthplace of the Messiah, joyously fulfilling a long-awaited promise. Today we confidently wait for the Messiah’s triumphant return. http://www1.cbn.com/devotions/celebrate-second-week-advent

School Uniform Survey

Please follow this link  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/CVVGWXM
to a survey about some possible changes to the school uniform. They include adding a cardigan (girls), vest (boys) navy Canterbury shorts ($40) and  a hoodie ($45) for the sports uniform. Please encourage everyone to complete this as we need a consensus to make any changes.

Week 8 – November 28 – December 2  First week of Advent
Advent is the period preceding the Christmas season. It begins on the Sunday nearest November 30, the feast day of St. Andrew the Apostle, and covers four Sundays. Because the day it begins changes from year to year, so does the length of each Advent season. Advent begins on November 27. The word advent, from Latin, means “the coming.” For centuries, Advent has been a time of spiritual reflection as well as cheer and anticipation.
“Prepare the way of the Lord” serves as a main theme of this season. As we get ready for Christmas, we should not neglect to prepare our lives for Jesus, who came as “the light of the world.” His light penetrated a dark world, which allowed all to see their Messiah, and the hope of their future.

Outstanding Accounts
We still have families owing for activity fees, touch and soccer. We asked in October, for all accounts to be settled by 11 November.  As this hasn’t happened, Christine will be contacting these families next week.

School Picnic
On Tuesday, 6 December 2016, we will walk to Anderson’s Park for a school picnic. We will leave school at 10.30 and walk together in our house groups. We will have morning tea before we leave. The children need to bring their lunch. No “warm-ups” on this day please.
The children need to wear their sports uniform and wear good sturdy walking shoes. Please send a jacket, a sunhat, suntan lotion  and a water bottle in your child’s school bag.
You are welcome to join us either at the park or at school to walk with us.
We will leave the park about 2 pm to walk back to school.

Class Mass
Room 1 and 2 will celebrate Mass on Tuesday, 6 December 2016, at 9.30 in the church. We would love you to gather with us for this end of year celebration. As we will be going to Anderson’s Park after Mass, the children are to wear their sports uniform, please.

Book Amnesty
Its time to hunt through your bookshelves and return any school resources. Please send anything that belongs to school (Basic Facts kits, library books, reading books, etc) back to school NOW! No questions asked. Many thanks
