23 February 2017

Dear Parents

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Johnstone family.

School uniform:

After an in depth discussion at the BOT meeting on Monday night, the uniform for Sacred Heart School was confirmed:

BOYS
Winter

  • Long sleeved grey shirt
  • Blue V neck jersey
  • College grey shorts – winter weight
  • Plain grey knee length socks
  • Tan, brown, or black school shoes

Summer

  • Short sleeved grey shirt
  • Blue V neck jersey
  • Summer weight grey shorts
  • Plain grey ankle socks
  • Tan, brown, navy or black school shoes or sandals
  • Sunhat – Sacred Heart hats are compulsory and available from the school office

GIRLS
Winter

  • Red and blue pinafore
  • White long sleeved blouse or white skivvy
  • Blue V neck jersey
  • Navy blue tights
  • Tan, brown, navy or black school shoes

Summer

  • Red and blue pinafore
  • White short sleeved blouse
  • Blue V neck jersey
  • Tan, brown, navy or black school shoes or sandals
  • White ankle socks
  • Sunhat – Sacred Heart hats are compulsory and available from the school office

Sports Uniform
(purchased through the school office)

  • Maroon polo shirt with the Sacred Heart crest on the left front
  • Plain navy blue shorts
  • Navy track pants with S H printed in red on the leg
  • Sports shoes
  • Plain white sports socks
  • Long sleeved thermals are not to be worn under the short sleeved sports’ top.
  • SH school sweat shirts are optional and maybe purchased from UniformNZ (based at the Invercargill airport).

School sports’ shorts will be available from the office on Monday for $17.

The availability of a good quality, navy blue sports’ short with no branding was chosen as the best option.  This new style of short will be phased in as the current SH printed shorts are phased out.  Canterbury shorts are not part of the school sports’ uniform.

It was decided that introducing a cardigan and vest would make it difficult to maintain a uniform look.

Personal Grooming:
Wrist watches and ear studs are the only jewellery permitted. (One small stud in each ear).
Student’s hair is to be kept tidy and tied back if long. Red, navy, blue or black hair accessories only.
All articles of clothing are to be named.
Temporary permission may be granted for uniform variance by sending a note/emailing the class teacher.
Information regarding the purchasing of uniforms (including sports uniforms) is available at the school office.

If you have any queries about school uniform, please contact Mrs Buxton.

PTA Support
At the most recent Board meeting the efforts of the PTA were highlighted. Some of the outcomes of the PTAs efforts are the TVs and Apple TVs in Room 5,8 & 9, chrome books and i-Pads across the school. The lease of some of our class computers, class games, Year 6 day costs, bibles for new students and Year 6s, sports equipment and the new SchoolStream app we are going to introduce. As well the PTA is involved in all our school celebrations providing parent help, a sausage sizzle, ice block or a cup of tea. They also run the 2nd-hand uniform shop and contribute a lot to the running of the school.

Their most important role in my eyes is their presence at all these events and the extra opportunities they provide for your children. Events such as the school fair are very important as a fundraising venture but more important as a fun filled venture for the children and pre-schoolers. The Pet Day later this year is another example of this.

I encourage as many parents as are able to consider becoming a part of out PTA, the adage ‘many hands makes light work ” is certainly true.

Zone Athletics – Tuesday 28/2
Tomorrow we will run off the Zone  1500 metres and the 7 year olds 60 & 100 metres at Sacred Heart. Not all children are involved in this. Next Tuesday 28/2 is the Zone athletics at Surrey Park. Your child should have received a notice about this yesterday.

Board of Trustees
It was with regret that the Board accepted the resignation of Paul Brooks as chairperson on Monday night. Paul has been on the Board for 5 years as a Proprietors representative and Chair for the past 3 years. I wish to acknowledge his contribution to the governance and wellbeing of our school during his tenure. We wish him all the best going forward.

Pie Warmer – This is now situated in Room 7.  Children can place their item on the trolley, first thing in the morning, which will be heated for lunch.

Sports Teams
We have teams entered into the touch, flipperball and cricket competitions, as well as teams in the soccer league. All relevant notices  we receive will be emailed home to parents. Draws can be found on the individual sports websites. Well done to Ruby Duffy who won an Otago Sparks women’s top.

Southland School Championship Touch Tournament
Sunday 19th March – Moore Reserve Winton – 10am start – 3pm finish. Cost $11 per player.  Grades: Boys, Girls, Mixed, Year 5/6 and Year 7/8.  If your child is interested in taking part in this tournament, please email: office@shsinv.school.nz or see me. We will only enter teams if we have enough interest.

Fruit Delivered from Roxburgh – The next fruit delivery will be on Thursday 2 March. Orders need to be in to the office (with money) by 9am Monday morning.  Available are: 4kg mixed box of nectarines, black doris plums, greengages for $20, 4kg box of black doris plums for $16, 2kg box of greengages for $15.

Congratulations to Robbie and Pippa Humm who both won their final, in the ‘Summer Series 3’ Surfing final at Colac Bay last weekend.

Room 9 Class Happenings

Milk
This year the year 5 students in Room 9 have come up with a new milk system. On Monday – Thursday at morning tea time the children have the option of having some milk to drink.   If you are wanting milk, just meet the Year 5 children outside the sport shed and drink the milk dry. ENJOY

Art
Some of our awesome self portraits.

Hard at work!
We have been learning what our best learning environment is. We have experimented working in groups, pairs and individually. Also we are testing if we work best outside, on the floor or at a desk. We have some great data.

Buddy Reading
Every Wednesday afternoon the Room 9 children get the opportunity to work with the Room 1 and 2 children. During this time the younger children read to their buddy and practice some maths, we also get to read to the juniors.

We look forward to sharing lots of experiences throughout the year.

The Wyndham Races Family Fun Day Sunday the 12th of March – Get along for a great day of racing at the most panoramic racecourse in Southland. Bring the family to enjoy a fun filled day for the kids with Bumperballs added this year. All kids activities are free including; bouncy castles, pony rides, face painting, scavenger hunts and a kids ‘Fashion in the Field’ competition (themed Funky Dress). Further we have the famous ‘Best Butchers’ competition with Edendale Butchery 2015, Blue Mountain Butchery Tapanui, Takatimu Sausages (Tuatapere) all part of this competition. Free tastings of these yummy sausages and you decide by voting on the one you think tastes the best. Win a horse for the day, and enter the hole in one golf competition with great prizes to be won. Keep this day free as you won’t be disappointed, as there is something to cater for everyone’s needs.  Any questions please contact Patrice Spencer-Humm at 0221563789.

Dear Parents

Welcome back to 2017. I hope you all had a good break over the Christmas and New Year period.

A special welcome to Mitchell Johnston, Elise Groot, Lucy Williams, Rhea Mohenoa, Keira Langford, Ryan Kiyas, Jack Dennis, Alby and Roland Cameron. We hope they enjoy their time at Sacred Heart.

We also welcome Courtney Wiseman to Room 8 and Lisa McCarthy as release teacher in Room 1.

We look forward to a very busy term with swimming, athletics and our Year 6 camp at Stewart Island. I apologise that the area outside Room 7 hasn’t been cleared yet. The original contractors have been replaced by a new firm from Auckland so the process of taking photos and deciding what to do has had to start from scratch again. We expect to have planning work beginning this month as part of our school upgrade. More information on this as I receive it.
